World Cup 2018 Qualifier: Germany – Czech Republic
The reigning world champions Germany will play their second qualifier on Saturday as they will host their eastern neighbours the Czech Republic. Germany are famous for their flawless performances in almost every qualifying campaign, which – combined with the stunning quality they have in their squad – means they are huge favourites of the Saturday clash and anything but a thumping win claimed by the German side would be a remarkable surprise. Kicking off at 8:45 PM (CET), the Group C match between Germany and the Czech Republic will be played at the Hamburg Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
Germany
Germany were expected to win this year´s EURO and the team were confident they could do it (especially after they beat their extremely unpopular opponents Italy in the quarter final) but eventually, the Germans did not even get to the final as they got eliminated by the hosts France in the semi final. The Germans are probably yet to get over the disappointment but there are no doubts they will do their best to win the upcoming World Cup to improve their reputation. The German team have a habit of qualifying for the final tournaments (of all kinds) in the shortest possible time and they will surely try to stick to the tradition this time too. In fact, Germany have not lost a single World Cup qualifier for long 15 years – since England destroyed them 5:1 in 2001. Low´s men kicked off the current campaign with a comfortable 3:0 win claimed over Norway and they are expected to have no troubles beating the Czechs in their next fixture.
Czech Republic
Just about a decade ago, the Czech national team were a top-notch and confident side feared by most European opponents but the team´s quality has decreased significantly over the past years. Therefore, their early exit from the EURO 2016 (after losing to both Spain and Turkey and drawing with Croatia) was not even considered a surprise. After their unsuccessful EURO campaign, several of the team´s key players such as Arsenal´s goalkeeper Petr Cech and Sparta Prague´s midfielder Tomas Rosicky retired from the squad and the team also changed their head coach. Led by the new manager Karel Jarolim, the Czechs delivered a promising performance in their friendly game against Armenia (3:0) at the end of August but they failed to be that productive in their qualifying opener against Northern Ireland (0:0) just a few days later. The Czechs will have a hard time breaking through the Germany´s brilliant and compact defence while they are very likely to concede from Germany´s world-class strikers.
Summary
On Saturday, the current world champions Germany will play another qualifier on their quest to defend the trophy. Led by some of the world´s most renowned players such as Muller, Ozil and Kroos, the German team have incomparably greater quality in their squad than any of their group rivals, including the Czech Republic. When these two sides met for the last time in 2007, the Czechs clinched a surprisingly easy win over the Germans (3:0) in a EURO 2008 qualifier but replicating this result in the Saturday match would be the a true shocker. To find out whether Germany meet the expectations and claim another convincing victory in their qualifying campaign, we will have to wait until Saturday night.
