Europa League: US Sassuolo - FC Luzern

One of the most interesting rematches of the third qualifying round will take place in Sassuolo where the home team will lock horns with the elite Swiss side FC Luzern. The first leg of this tie was expected to be a tightly contested affair, which it really was. Both teams scored one goal in the fixture, meaning the series is to be decided in the Thursday replay. This time around, the Italians will have the advantage of playing in front of their home crowd, which is also one of the reasons why Sassuolo will be the favourites of the game. Starting at 8:30 PM (CET), the clash between Sassuolo and Luzern will be played in the city of Reggio Emilia.

US Sassuolo

US Sassuolo have been making their historical debut at a major international championship this year. Considering it was not until the 2013/2014 season when Neroverdi got to play in the highest Italian league for the very first time, the team have obviously grown a great deal in the past few years. Sassuolo were drawn against the Swiss side Luzern in the Europa League third qualifying round. The first leg was played in Switzerland and Di Francesco´s men gave a solid display in the fixture, claiming a promising 1:1 draw. Consequently, any win or a goalless draw in the upcoming replay will send the Italians to the next round. During the summer transfer window, Sassuolo signed eight new players so they should be even more competitive and stronger side than they were in the past season. Last year, the team produced several glorious home wins including victories over Juventus Torino and Inter Milano, which suggests they should have the upper hand in the Thursday clash against Luzern too.

FC Luzern

Luzern have already made several appearances at prestigious European championships but they have never produced any major achievement so far. In fact, Luzern failed to reach the Europa League group stage in any of their last three occasions as they got eliminated by FC Utrecht in 2010, by KRC Genk in 2012 and by St. Johnstone in 2014. This year, the draw was even more merciless to them as it sent them against the in-form Italian team Sassuolo. However, Markus Babbel´s squad delivered quite a good showing in the first leg in which they proved to be a real match for the Italians. In fact, all of the statistics including goals, possession, shots on target, corners etc. were more or less equal. Encouraged by the result of the first leg as well as by the strong pre-season preparation, the Swiss are looking to surprise Sassuolo in the rematch but claiming a win on the Italian soil will be extremely hard. Luzern are clear underdogs in this tie and it would be surprising to see them advance further.

Stadio Citta del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia will host an interesting Europa League encounter as US Sassuolo and FC Luzern will battle it out there in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie. The first duel resulted in a 1:1 draw, which gives both teams chances of qualifying for the next round but the Italians are in a better position to progress from this tie. Sassuolo enjoyed a great season last year and they are ready to pick up where they left off. Will they make the home advantage count and clinch a win in the match? Or will the Swiss beat the odds and secure their spot in the next round with a surprising victory? We will know by Thursday night.
