EURO 2016: Slovakia-England

Both Slovakia and England are looking to claim a win to gain automatic qualification for the round of 16 in their upcoming head-to-head duel that will take place on Monday. After their unlucky defeat at the hands of Wales in their opener, Slovakia pulled together, clinching a crucial win over Russia in their next game. The current group leaders, England already have one foot in the knock-out stage after producing one draw and one victory in their previous matches. On Monday, these two sides will pit their strength against each other in what might decide the group winners. Starting at 9 PM (CET), the Group B clash Slovakia versus England will be played at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Étienne.

Slovakia

In their first ever EURO match against Wales, Slovakia put in a solid performance and they were very close to claiming a draw in the duel but with just 9 minutes remaining, Wales scored their lucky winner, beating Slovakia 2:1. In order to stay in contention for the advancement, the Slovaks needed to win their next match against Russia, which they eventually did. Brilliant performance by Hamsik, who assisted Weiss score their first goal and netted the second goal himself, gave the team a promising 2:0 lead at the halftime. Slovakia´s defence had to withstand huge pressure in the second half as the Russians dominated the possession and had a number of chances but Kozak´s men only allowed them to score one goal. Eventually, Slovakia won the game 2:1, putting themselves in a great position to progress from the group. In their final group encounter, Slovakia will face off England who they have a very unfavourable record against as they lost all three matches these two sides have played against each other.

England

England have been meeting the expectations and after the first two rounds, they are sitting in the top spot of the Group B table with one draw and one win. However, both of their group matches turned out to be highly dramatic and nerve-wrecking affairs that were decided in the very last minutes. In their first match against Russia, the English were literally seconds away from picking up what would be a well-deserved victory but their opponents managed to equalize the score through their captain Berezutski. In their next duel, England were staring at another draw before Sturridge scored a super late winner deep into the stoppage time. Encouraged by this dramatic turnaround, Hodgson´s men are now ready to complete their group stage mission with another morale-boosting win ahead of the knock-out stage. If they could replicate the performance they delivered in the second half of the match against Wales, they should make it past Slovakia to finish as the group winners.

Summary

The Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium in Saint-Étienne will witness a great football clash as Slovakia and England will battle it out in their final group encounter. Slovakia are one of the tournament´s debutants but they have already proved their quality as they put in a formidable showing in both of their previous matches. However, claiming any points against star-studded and more experienced England will be very hard for them. Will Slovakia produce a result that will send them to the round of 16? Or will England meet the role of the favourite of this clash and obtain a win in this interesting fixture? We will know by Monday night.
