EURO 2016: Iceland-Hungary
The second Saturday fixture will feature an interesting meeting of teams that both staged big surprises in their openers. Iceland put in a heroic performance in their first ever EURO game, holding out for a draw against huge favourites Portugal while Hungary shocked with their impressive 2:0 win over strong Austria. Encouraged by these achievements, both Iceland and Hungary are now looking to make it to the knock-out stage, which would be another big surprise as these two sides were considered the Group F outsiders. Starting at 6 PM (CET), the clash between Iceland and Hungary will be played at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille.
Iceland
The smallest country to have ever qualified for the European championship, Iceland had a great moment in their debut match against one of the tournament´ s biggest favourites Portugal. The Portuguese took the lead through Nani but Iceland managed to strike back via Bjarnason who scored an equalizer after a well-played break. Portugal totally dominated the pitch and they got Iceland under a huge pressure but Lagerback´s men fought hard enough to withstand the pressure, keeping Ronaldo and other Portuguese stars at bay until the end of the match. Elated over this fabulous accomplishment, Iceland are now to play Hungary in their next game. As the Hungarians have a way less formidable squad than Portugal, the Saturday game should be more tightly contested with ball possession distributed between the sides more equally. Let us see if the Icelanders can be also creative and dangerous in the offence enough to clinch their very first EURO win.
Hungary
Hungary had a hard time securing their spot at the tournament and they were not very impressive in the preparatory stage either, which – combined with the lack of top players in their squad – made them one of the championship´s outsiders. However, the performance and result they produced in their opener against Austria suggests these presumptions might have been completely wrong. The Hungarians put in a very disciplined and confident showing against the Austrians, claiming an easy 2:0 win over them. Thanks to this unexpected but well-deserved victory, Hungary are now sitting top of their group table, knowing just one more point might be enough for them to book their spot in the knock-out stage. Storck´s team will have their first opportunity to gain the coveted points on Saturday when they will face Iceland. The history implies they should be able to beat them as they won four last matches against this opponent but the current Icelandic team is much stronger than it was in the past years, meaning Hungary will have their work cut out for them in the match.
Summary
The iconic Velodrome Stadium in Marseille will host what appears to be an attractive and very tight football affair as Iceland and Hungary will battle it out in a Group F clash. With both of these sides full of confidence after their stunning results in the openers, this game will probably have a huge bearing on the destiny of the group. Iceland proved their defence quality in their first match against Portugal but will they be able to deliver in the attack too? Most of the previous head-to-head duels between these two sides featured a number of goals and we are likely to see both of them score in their upcoming encounter as well.
