Premier League: Crystal Palace - Leicester City



With just a few rounds left until the end of this Premier League season, the title race is getting more intense and dramatic. It is Leicester who are still in the best position to claim the trophy and while their dominancy might have been surprising earlier in the season, it is not startling any more to see them in the top spot as they boast the most stable form in the league. Currently five points ahead of second-placed Tottenham, the Foxes have every chance of claiming the trophy and if they manage to pick up a victory over Crystal Palace in the Saturday game, they will be another step closer to the ultimate triumph. Ranieri´s squad might not be as dominating as they used to be earlier this season but they have been still winning, which is why they still maintain a promising lead at the top of the table. As the team´s two biggest stars Vardy and Mahrez have been less productive in the last couple of games, the Foxes have mostly produced narrow 1:0 wins lately. But the team´s coach is well aware of their unique chance to produce a glorious achievement this year and he will surely make his players do their best in the remaining matches. With 24 points still at stake, the lead they currently have can be still easily reduced but Leicester have grown a great deal this season, transforming themselves into an experienced and highly competitive side. Determined to win the title, they will go all-out for a victory in the Saturday clash as well.

Premier League: Manchester City – Manchester United



On Sunday, the Etihad Stadium will host yet another famous Manchester derby as the Citizens will take on their rivals United in the most attractive game of the Premier League´s 31st round. Although neither of these two renowned sides have been able to meet their pre-season goals and fans´ expectations, their upcoming head-to-head battle will be just as intense and thrilling as these derbies usually are. With the teams being just four points apart in the table, there is a lot to play for in the duel. The long-awaited Manchester derby will begin at 5 PM (CET).



Manchester City



In the Premier league, the Citizens have been constantly failing to perform well in crucial games against their biggest rivals, which has prevented them from claiming the coveted top spot. Right now, Manchester are occupying the fourth place, as many as 12 points adrift of the current leaders, which means their dreams about the league title are practically gone. It was the three consecutive losses against Leicester (1:3), Tottenham (1:2) and Liverpool (0:3) what might have put an end to their hopes. After these disappointing failures, Pellegrini´s men gave a great display against Aston Villa who they trashed 4:0 but in their last league fixture, they suffered another setback as they were held to a goalless draw at struggling Norwich. On Tuesday, the Citizens produced the same bore result (0:0) in their Champions League round of 16 rematch against Dynamo Kyiv, which was enough for them to qualify for the quarter-finals but the performance they gave in the game could hardly please their fans. Moreover, City suffered another injury misery in the duel as both Kompany and Otamendi limped off during the first half, giving Pellegrini yet another headache ahead of the Sunday derby.



Manchester United



Despite the promising start to the season, United have been experiencing even more disappointing year than their city rivals. In the domestic league, Manchester have been struggling with an alarmingly inconsistent performance, which has not allowed them to move anywhere near where they were hoping to be in the table. Right now, van Gaal´s squad are placed sixth, two points shy of West Ham who are occupying the last Europa League spot. Talking about the Europa League, United were given a chance to join this tournament after they got knocked out of the Champions League but it was just the Danish outsiders Midtjylland who they make it past in the first play-off round. In the next stage, Manchester were drawn against Liverpool who they lost to 1:3 on aggregate. In fact, United failed to win any of their last four matches in all competitions and with respect to their wildly fluctuating form, they might even have troubles finishing in the top five. On Sunday, they will take on their city neighbours but their chances of producing a good result against the Citizens are not very high as neither the recent head-to-head history, nor the current form is on their side.

Premier League fans are in for another great Manchester derby that will take place on Sunday. Neither Manchester side have been playing well lately, struggling to claim the spots they were originally hoping for but over the years, the Manchester derby has built a reputation to be one of the most prestigious and attractive games of the league. On Saturday, the Reds will take on Tottenham who they have a good record against – Liverpool won five out of their last six games against the Spurs and they will surely try to further improve the statistics.



Tottenham Hotspur



No matter if they manage to top it with the coveted title or not, Tottenham have been enjoying a fabulous season this year. Having lost just 4 out of the 31 league matches, the Spurs are currently sitting in the runners-up spot, just 5 points adrift of the leaders Leicester. As Tottenham won their last title as many as 55 years ago, claiming the trophy this year would be a truly outstanding achievement for this club. The team´s coach Pochettino already demonstrated what his priorities are when the Spurs forfeited their potential Europa League success as they spared a number of their mainstays in their round of 16 duels against Dortmund (0:3 and 1:2). Obviously, Tottenham are now ready to put of all of their efforts into their Premier League campaign, hoping to win as many games as they can and stay in contention for the title. In the remaining matches, they will heavily rely on their brightest star Harry Kane who is currently the top scorer of the league. We will see if this excellent sniper can extend his impressive 21 goal tally in the Saturday fixture.

Last year, Newcastle ended up in the 15th spot, which was a disappointment for this club´s fans but unfortunately for them, this season is almost sure to be even less successful for the Magpies. Newcastle had a miserable start to the new season as they only managed to win one out of the first 11 league games. At the beginning of December, the team´s form seemed to be on the rise after the Magpies beat Liverpool (2:0) and Tottenham (2:1) but then, another dismal series of failures followed. Between the 26th and 33rd round, for example, Newcastle lost six out of the seven league matches. In fact, it was not until the 34th round when Benítez finally experienced what it feels like to win a game with his new side after the Magpies beat Swansea 3:0. Encouraged by this achievement, the team gave another promising display against Manchester City in the last round, holding the Citizens to a 1:1 draw. Stealing points at in-form Liverpool will be even more difficult though.

Tým trenéra Kloppa dokázal vyřadit celou řadu kvalitních celků včetně gigantů jako je Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund nebo španělský Villarreal a naprosto zaslouženě si vybojoval účast ve finále této prestižní soutěže. To se ale bude hrát až osmnáctého května, takže do té doby se budou Reds koncentrovat zase na Premiér League, kde mají také stále o co hrát. Tým z města Beatles se teď sice nachází až na osmé příčce, ale jelikož má středeční dohrávku s Chelsea k dobru a týmy na sedmém a šestém místě mají jen minimální bodový náskok, Liverpool by se v případě výhry posunul na místo zajišťující účast v Evropské lize pro příští rok. To by se Reds hodilo, protože pokud letošní finále této soutěže prohrají, jedinou cestou do evropských pohárů pro příští rok by bylo dobré umístění v lize. Motivaci do středečního souboje s Blues tedy mají svěřenci trenéra Kloppa velkou, takže určitě udělají všechno pro to, aby svého londýnského rivala porazili a své postavení v tabulce vylepšili.



Chelsea FC



Chelsea se sice díky mírnému zlepšení v únoru a březnu vyškrábala z dolní poloviny tabulky, ale ani aktuální devátá příčka se rozhodně nedá považovat za úspěch. Spíš naopak – Chelsea letos prožívá jednu z nejhorších sezon ve své historii a všichni její hráči i fanoušci si určitě přejí, aby už tento ročník skončil a co nejrychleji se na něj zapomnělo. Sestup, který Londýňanům v některých fázích sezony hrozil, se jim nakonec podařilo zažehnat a vytoužené pohárové příčky jsou pro ně už dávno nedosažitelné, takže Blues závěr sezony dohrávají už jen takříkajíc z povinnosti. To se taky projevilo na výsledcích – Chelsea dokázala z posledních pěti ligových utkání vyhrát jen jediné (v Bournemouthu zvítězila 4:1). Ve zbylých čtyřech zápasech třikrát prohrála (se Swansea, Manchesterem City a Sunderlandem) a jednou remizovala (s Tottenhamem). Londýňané v posledních zápasech evidentně postrádají motivaci a chuť do hry a pokud tento přístup nezmění, tak ve středu proti rozjetému a zdravě nabuzenému Liverpoolu nejspíš nebudou mít šanci.



Shrnutí



Liverpool si po fantastickém výkonu proti Villarrealu zajistil účast ve finále Evropské ligy a teď se pokusí ještě alespoň částečně vylepšit své postavení v domácí soutěži. Reds mají před sebou v lize ještě dva zápasy a pokud oba vyhrají, mohli by se za určitých okolností dostat na šesté nebo i páté místo, což by bylo vzhledem k tomu, jak se v první polovině sezony trápili, určitě úspěch. Navážou Liverpoolští na parádní výkony z posledních zápasů i proti Chelsea? Nebo budou s výsledkem středeční dohrávky spokojenější hosté z Londýna? Nechme se překvapit.

Arsenal FC



Od doby, kdy Arsenal vypadl z Ligy mistrů, se jeho hráči opět plně koncentrují jen na domácí soutěž, ve kterém se jim v závěru sezony celkem daří. Londýnský celek v Premiér League neprohrál už osm zápasů v řadě, což ho stále udržuje ve hře o druhou příčku. Faktem je, že Gunners se v poslední době utkávali spíše s celky ze spodních pater tabulky, ale v minulém kole vybojovali cennou remízu (2:2) i na půdě svého velkého rivala Manchesteru City. Arsenalu se navíc v závěru soutěže téměř vyprázdnila marodka, na které zůstává už jen dlouhodobě zraněný Oxlade-Chamberlaine. Do hry se už znovu zapojil i Tomáš Rosický, který teď sice většinou nastupuje za rezervní tým, ale v nedělním utkání proti Aston Ville by se prý mohl také na pár minut objevit. Na Aston Villu se Arsenalu mimořádně daří – porazil ji desetkrát z posledních jedenácti vzájemných utkání a při současné formě obou mužstev se nic jiného než další výhra Gunners nedá čekat ani tentokrát.



Aston Villa



Aston Villa letos prožila jednu z nejhorších sezon ve své dlouhé, 141 let trvající historii. Tým z Birminghamu neměl pro tento ročník žádné velké ambice a očekávalo se, že ho bude stejně jako v předchozích letech čekat nejspíš jen boj o záchranu, ale že na tom budou Villans až tak špatně, to asi nepředpokládal nikdo. Aston Villa dokázala z dosavadních 37 zápasů vyhrát jen tři a s pouhými sedmnácti body je už dlouhou dobu beznadějně poslední. Tým trenéra Blacka je už dávno jistým sestupujícím, takže motivaci do zápasů hledají jeho svěřenci jen těžko. Aston Villa musela nedávno skousnout mimořádně frustrující sérii dvanácti porážek v řadě, která skončila až v minulém kole, v němž Villans uhráli bod za domácí bezbrankovou remízu s Newcastlem. Birminghamský celek letos propadl zejména v obraně – 72 inkasovaných gólů v 37 zápasech je jednoznačně nejhorší bilance v celé lize. Při velmi dobré formě Arsenalu, (zejména jeho útočné dvojice Giroud a Sánchez), je tedy dost pravděpodobné, že Aston Villa zakončí letošní katastrofickou sezonu dalším debaklem.



Shrnutí



Arsenal neprohrál už osm ligových utkání v řadě a v tabulce se neustále drží na třetím místě v těsném závěsu za svým městským rivalem Tottenhamem. Do konce sezony už ale zbývá jen poslední kolo, takže o tom, jestli Gunners vytouženou druhou příčku získají nebo ne, se rozhodne už tuto neděli. První podmínkou ke splnění tohoto přání je výhra nad trápící se Aston Villou. Potvrdí domácí roli jasného favorita tohoto utkání a přibalí Aston Ville na cestu do druhé ligy očekávaný gólový příděl?
