Champions League: Atlético Madrid - PSV Eindhoven

On Tuesday, Atlético Madrid and PSV Eindhoven will battle it out for a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. The first leg of the series resulted in a goalless draw in the Netherlands, which means both of these sides still have a good chance of making it to the final eight. Yet, based on their excellent current form and much more experienced squad, it is the Spanish team who will be clear favourites in the rematch. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the duel Atlético Madrid – PSV Eindhoven will be played at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético was already considered the favourite in the first clash at Eindhoven but the Dutch gave a very good and disciplined performance and despite their midfielder Pereiro having been sent off for two yellow cards after 68 minutes, they still managed to hold Atletico to a goalless draw. Since this clash, Atléti have played four matches in La Liga where they are in contention for the runners-up spot. Having won all these four games, Colchoneros beat Real Madrid (1:0), Real Sociedad (3:0), Valencia (3:1) and La Coruna (3:0). It was the away win claimed at Real what gave Atlético the promising four-point lead over their city rivals in the league table. Encouraged by these recent successes, Simeone´s men are looking to extend their winning streak on Tuesday as only a victory claimed over Eindhoven will get them in the quarter-finals. Any loss or score draw will see their Dutch rivals progressing further.

PSV Eindhoven

PSV already surprised many football fans as they beat the odds and advanced from what was one of the toughest groups with renowned sides CSKA Moscow, Manchester United and Wolfsburg as their opponents. After this daring feat, the Dutch were confident they could make it past another elite team as they were drawn against Atlético in the round of 16. Eindhoven survived being a man down for almost a half an hour and earned a goalless draw in the first leg. While this result might look quite promising, the team´s coach Cocu knows his players will be up for an extremely challenging task in the rematch as the Spanish will go all-out for a victory. Moreover, PSV failed to produce a good result in their last league duel against Heerenveen whom they just tied with 1:1. To keep their chances of progressing further alive, they will need to give much better performance in the Tuesday clash. Apart from Pereiro (suspension), PSV will be without Guardado and Lestienne (both injury) in the replay.

Summary

The Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid will host what promises to be a very entertaining duel as it is all to play for Atlético Madrid and PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 series. The Dutch are one of the underdogs in the last 16 but the results they produced in the group and in the first leg of the first play-off round suggest they definitely have their quality. Well aware of that, the Spanish are sure to give their best performance in the clash as only a victory will earn them the coveted spot in the quarter-finals. Will Atlético meet the expectations and edge ahead of their Dutch rivals? We will know by Tuesday night.

Champions League: Manchester City - Dynamo Kiev

The other Champions League round of 16 rematch to be played on Tuesday is also a highly attractive fixture but in this case, the destiny of the series was practically decided already. After claiming a 3:1win at Kyiv in the first leg, Manchester City have one foot in the quarter-finals. However, Dynamo are heading into the game encouraged by two consecutive league victories and they are sure to put up a good fight against the Citizens. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the clash between Manchester City and Dynamo Kyiv will be played at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Manchester City

Manchester have been dealing with a very unstable performance recently. In the Premier League, Pellegrini´s men have been struggling to keep up with the top sides like Leicester and Tottenham and with only a few rounds left, their chances of winning the title are literally next to zero. Citizens´ FA Cup campaign also ended up in a failure after they got hammered 1:5 by Chelsea in the fifth round. On the other hand, Manchester managed to win the League Cup and they have been doing very well in the Champions League. The English lived up to the expectations in the group stage, claiming the top spot in the Group D that featured Juventus Torino, Sevilla and Monchengladbach. In the round of 16, Manchester were drawn against Dynamo Kyiv whom they beat 3:1 in the first leg, creating a great two-goal lead ahead of the rematch. Considering their unconvincing Premier League results, the Citizens are likely to focus on their Champions League campaign more and they will certainly try to seal their quarter-final advancement with another victory on Tuesday.

Dynamo Kiev

For Dynamo, the round of 16 opener against Manchester was actually the first match after the long winter break and the stoppage proved to be a problem for the Ukrainians. Despite having a good home record against English sides, Dynamo put in quite a dull and disorganized display in the game, losing 1:3 to the Citizens. Consequently, Rebrov´s team will be in for a daunting and seemingly impossible mission in the second leg – to beat Manchester by at least three goals at their own soil. Kyiv have been slowly getting into the shape as they obtained two league wins over Dnipro (2:0) and Lviv (2:1) but it will definitely take much more to beat the Citizens in the replay. This year, Manchester have only lost to Juventus in the Champions League and it would be a big surprise if Dynamo became the second team to defeat the English football giants. However, if the Ukrainians manage to pull a fast goal in the Tuesday clash at Manchester, the game might get dramatized.

Summary

As winning the Premier League title does not seem like a probable scenario for the Citizens now, they are likely to pay more attention to their Champions League where their chances of producing a major achievement are still quite high. After producing an impressive 3:1 win at Kyiv in the first match, the English are ready to dispatch Kyiv with another victory. Will the Citizens manage to beat their rivals again? Or will the series get an unexpected plot twist? We will know by Tuesday night.

Champions League: FC Barcelona – Arsenal FC

On Wednesday, two football blockbusters are to be watched and bet on as the Champions League continues with its round of 16 second legs, featuring battles Bayern vs. Juventus and Barcelona vs. Arsenal. Boasting outstanding form, Barcelona claimed 2:0 win in the first leg, which allows them to produce anything from a draw to a one-goal defeat in the rematch and still make it to the quarter-finals but there are no doubts the Catalans are looking to beat their London rivals again and extend their impressive winning streak. Kicking off at 8:45 PM (CET), the replay FC Barcelona vs. Arsenal FC will be played at Camp Nou in Barcelona.

FC Barcelona

Barcelona have been enjoying yet another amazing season. Eight points clear at the top of the league table and into the final of the Spanish Cup, a second straight treble is well within the Catalans´ sight. In their last league duel, Barca totally destroyed Getafe 6:0 and they even claimed this fabulous victory without several of their mainstays as the coach Enrique decided to rest Suárez, Busquets, Rakitic and Alves. With these players on the pitch on Wednesday, the reigning European champions are likely to beat ailing Arsenal by more than just two goals as they did in the first duel. In fact, Arsenal put up a good fight against Barca in the first leg but they still failed to stop Messi who scored two goals at the end of the game, giving his team a comfortable lead for the rematch. Barcelona have been unbeaten for long months and even if they play in second gear in the rematch, they should be still able to claim another win over Arsenal.

Arsenal FC

Asenal have been through gloomy and difficult times. Just a few weeks ago, the Gunners were considered the main favourites to win the Premier League this year but after several failures in crucial games against their main rivals, their dreams about the league title are slowly going up in smoke. Out of the last seven matches in all competitions, Arsenal only managed to pick up one victory, which is a truly shameful score for such an ambitious side. The performance that they gave in the first leg against Barcelona was actually quite good but still, it only allowed them to suffer a “bearable” 0:2 defeat. It is a known fact that it is in these “all is lost” situations when Arsenal often give their very best but overturning a two-goal deficit against team who might have the best form in the world, looks like a mission impossible. To make things even more difficult for the Gunners, they will still be without their key goalkeeper Cech who is out due to injury.

Summary

In the first Wednesday game, we will be up for an interesting confrontation between two elite European sides Barcelona and Arsenal. The current form and spirits of these two teams can hardly be more different though. While Barca have literally turned into a well-oiled winning machine, the Gunners have been struggling with a major drop-off in form. With that said, it comes as no surprise that the Catalans will be clear favourites in the duel. Will Barca seal their advancement with another glorious victory? Or will the visitors beat the odds and claim a surprising result at Camp Nou? We will know by Wednesday night.

Champions League: Bayern Munich - Juventus Torino

The other Wednesday clash promises to be a more intense and dramatic affair than the first one as the Champions League round of 16 opener between Bayern and Juventus ended up in a 2:2 draw, leaving this tie balanced on a knife edge. Yet, the Germans are heading into the rematch in a slightly better position as any win or low-score draw will get them to the quarter-finals. With Juventus having to score some goals to keep their chances of progressing alive, we can expect an offensive and tightly fought contest. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the long-awaited duel Bayern Munich vs. Juventus Torino will be played at Allianz Arena in Munich.

Bayern Munich

In the group stage, Bayern dominated most of their matches, producing trashing victories against all of their rivals in at least one game. Consequently, Munich were expected to prevail in their round of 16 series against Torino as well. The Germans began to assert their authority as early as in the first 60 minutes of the opener at Torino after goals from Muller and Robben either side of halftime. However, Juventus launched a stunning fight back, equalling the score via Dybala and Sturaro. While the draw with two away goals is still a good result for Bayern, the great momentum shift from the end of the first game might be a significant boost for the Italians. With the outcome of the series still open, it is in the rematch where it will be all decided. Bayern can definitely count on their fans´ support in the Wednesday game but the Bavarians will not be at full strength as they will be without Boateng, Badstuber and Martínez (all due to injury).

Juventus Torino

After the thrilling battle against Bayern, Juventus have made an appearance in four matches out of which they claimed three wins and suffered one loss. Torino recorded three straight wins in Serie A against Inter Milan (2:0), Atalanta (2:0) and Sassuolo (1:0), extending their outstanding run of 18 wins and one draw out of their last 19 league duels. The only defeat they have suffered recently occurred when they got beaten by Inter Milano in the rematch of the Italian Cup semi-final but Juventus still made it to the final after a penalty shootout. Allegri´s squad have been heavily relying on their perfectly working defence supported by their iconic goalkeeper Buffon who has not conceded a single goal in last ten league matches but in the upcoming Champions League clash against Bayern, Juventus will also have to focus on their offence as they will probably have to win the fixture to advance further. However, claiming an away win over Bayern does not seem very accomplishable.

Summary

The Allianz Arena in Munich will host what is considered one of the greatest games to be played in the Champions League round of 16 stage as two of Europe´s most renowned and in-form sides Bayern and Juventus will battle it out for a spot in the last eight. While they are both reigning champions of their domestic leagues where they are currently occupying the top spots again, only one of them will make it to the next round of the Champions League play-offs. Bayern´s hugely impressive home record in the tournament coupled with their formidable form means the home team will be the favourite of the duel but Juventus are guaranteed to put up a great fight against the Germans. Which of these two amazing teams will be more successful in this attractive tie? We will know by Wednesday night.

Champions League: Paris Saint Germain - Manchester City

The other Wednesday quarter final game will be an interesting confrontation between English and French football as reigning French champions PSG will take on an elite Premier League side Manchester City. With the league title being unreachable for them this season, the Citizens will probably focus on their Champions League campaign where they still can produce a major accomplishment. However, the Parisians are also looking to progress further. Starting off at 8:45 PM (CET), the first quarter final leg between Paris Saint Germain and Manchester City will be played at the Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris, France.

Paris Saint Germain

Paris started out their Champions League campaign in the Group A where their opponents were Malmo, Donetsk and Real Madrid. PSG and Real were considered the biggest favourites of the group and they did meet the expectations, finishing in the first two spots. Three points adrift of Real, Paris emerged as the runner-up of the group with a positive score of four wins, one draw and one defeat. In the round of 16, the French were pitted against Chelsea who they knocked out with ease after winning both legs. PSG have been dominating the French league as well. Currently as many as 25 points clear at the top of the table, Blanc´s men are already certain to defend the last year´s title. Yet, the team have been still playing with maximum effort, which was obvious in their last league against Nice who they hammered 4:1. The team´s evergreen Ibrahimovic scored hat-trick in the duel, rounding off his league tally to incredible 30 goals. In other words, PSG have been in a brilliant form and they are expected to beat Manchester in the Wednesday match.

Manchester City

Manchester lived up to the expectations in the group stage, claiming the top spot in the Group D that featured Juventus Torino, FC Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach. In the round of 16, Manchester were also impressive as they dispatched Dynamo Kiev 3:1 on aggregate. Citizens´ Premier League campaign is another story though. Manchester were considered one of the biggest favourites to win the league title this year and they have spent most of the time in the top three but lately, their performance has dropped significantly. With just two wins out of their last seven league matches, Pellegrini´s men will rather have to compete for a spot in the top five than for the title. With that said, winning the Champions League will be another way for the Citizens to make sure they will make an appearance in the competition next year but if they do not improve their performance, the quarter final will probably be their last stop. We will see if they can pull together and produce a good result at Paris.

Summary

The newly crowned French champions can now fully focus on producing yet another glorious achievement in the Champions League where they will face Manchester City in their quarter final tie. Paris have never won the trophy but this year, they might have quite a good chance of claiming the title as Laurent Blanc have built a highly competitive team that is predestined to win. After making it past Chelsea in the round of 16, the French will take on another elite English side Manchester City. Will they make the home advantage count and secure a victory in the first leg? We will know by Wednesday night.

Champions League: Manchester City – Real Madrid

With only five matches to play until the end of this Champions League season, we are up for some fine and intense football events after the reigning champions FC Barcelona were unexpectedly knocked out as early as in the quarter final. The first semi final opener is to be watched on Tuesday in Manchester where the debutantes Citizens will take on a side who have reached this stage more than any other team – Real Madrid. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the first leg of the Champions League semi final tie between Manchester City and Real Madrid will be played at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Manchester City

Manchester have been through a season that is likely to be referred to as contradictory. The Citizens have failed to meet the pre-season ambitions in the domestic league where they were considered the biggest candidates to win the title but their Champions League campaign has been outstanding. After progressing from one of the toughest groups (featuring Juventus Torino, FC Sevilla and Monchengladbach), the English side gave a great performance against Dynamo Kyiv in the round of 16, dispatching the Ukrainians 3:1 on aggregate. Consequently, Manchester made their very first appearance in the quarter final but not even this stage became their last stop as Pellegrini´ s men managed to beat Paris Saint Germain, moving to the last four. Their semi final opponents will be even tougher than the French giants but Real will be without some of their key players which makes the home side´s chances of producing a good result in the first leg better.

Real Madrid

Real have produced several impressive and morale-boosting results in the last couple of weeks. On April 2nd, ten-man Los Blancos claimed a glorious win over Barcelona in El Clásico, putting an end to Barca´s remarkable unbeaten run. Ten days later, Madrid gave another inspirational display in the second leg of their Champions League quarter final series against Wolfsburg. After a frustrating 0:2 defeat suffered in the opener, Real managed to overturn the deficit in the rematch, beating the Germans 3:0 at Santiago Bernabéu. Since then, Zidane´s men have played three La Liga duels, beating Getafe (5:1), Villarreal (3:0) a Vallecano (3:2) respectively. Thanks to these wins, Los Blancos have stayed in the title race (they are currently placed just one point behind the leaders Barcelona) but the team´s players are used to such a challenging workload and they will surely do their best to win as many as games as they can in both La Liga and the Champions League. Nevertheless, they will probably have to make do without Ronaldo and Benzema (both injury) in the Tuesday game.

Summary

Manchester City are feeling the weight of history as they are preparing for their Champions League semi final opener against Real Madrid. Unsurprisingly, it is the Spanish side who are the favourites of this tie but the Citizens have already managed to eliminate a renowned and experienced team as they knocked out the French champions PSG in the quarter final. Will Manchester beat another European giant? Or will it be Real who will create a better position for the rematch? We will know by Tuesday night.

Champions League: Atlético Madrid – Bayern Munich

On Wednesday, football fans are up for another attractive and tight battle as two of the most European in-form sides Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich will cross their swords in the first leg of their Champions League semi final series. After Barcelona were eliminated from the competition, Bayern are the biggest favourites to win the trophy but it was Atlético who actually knocked out the Catalans in the quarter final. Encouraged by this impressive achievement, the Madrid outfit are now looking to beat another football giant. Kicking off at 8:45 PM (CET), the clash Atlético Madrid vs. Bayern Munich will be played at the Vicente Calderone Stadium in Madrid.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético have been enjoying another great season this year. In the domestic competition, Simeone´s men are currently placed second, level on points with the La Liga leaders Barcelona and their Champions League campaign has been just as successful. In the round of 16, Atlético had unexpectedly hard times making it past PSV Eindhoven (who they only eliminated after penalties) but they saved the superb performance for their quarter final matches against FC Barcelona. After losing 1:2 to the Catalans in the first leg, Madrid gave a stunning display in the home rematch, beating Barca 2:0 and securing their spot in the last four. In the next stage of the tournament, the Atléti will take on the Bavarian giants Bayern Munich who might actually be even tougher opponents than Barcelona were. While the Catalans heavily rely on their attacking trio Messi – Neymar – Suárez (who were well below their best in the quarter final replay), Bayern combine a larger number of world-class players into a more structured and balanced approach, which makes them an exceptionally competitive and versatile side that is very hard to beat.

Bayern Munich

Dominating the highest German league again, Bayern are looking to claim the treble this year (domestic title, German Cup trophy and the European Cup). As expected, Bayern topped their group, having won 5 out of their 6 games, securing their spot in the play-offs for the 8th time in row. In the round of 16, the Germans were pitted against Juventus Torino who are also an elite European side but with respect to the stunning Bayern´s form, the Italians were regarded the underdogs in the tie. After claiming a promising 2:2 away draw in the first leg, Munich were supposed to seal their advancement with a home victory in the rematch but it was the Italians who took an early 2:0 lead in the replay. However, Bayern staged an epic comeback, completing the glorious turnaround in the extra time after goals by Alcantara and Coman. In the quarter final, the Germans were pitted against Benfica Lisbon who also gave a better and more courageous performance than Bayern thought they would but Munich still managed to make it past them (3:2 on aggregate). Their next rivals, Atlético, are even more tenacious and aggressive side (especially on their soil), and if Bayern don’t give their best performance in the duel, they might well get beaten by the Spaniards.

Summary

On Wednesday, the old Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid will be the site of a hotly-anticipated fixture as it will host the battle between Atlético and Bayern Munich. Encouraged by their morale-boosting quarter final triumph over Barcelona and their current five-game winning streak, Atlético are determined to win the opener. On the other hand, Bayern can also boast an impressive record – the Germans have been unbeaten in their last 11 matches. Obviously, one of these two admirable series will soon come to an end. To find out which one, we will have to wait until Wednesday night.
