EURO 2016: Germany - Slovakia

The reigning world champions, Germany will meet up with Slovakia for their round of 16 tie in what promises to be a very interesting game. Just as expected, the Germans finished top of their group but their performances were far from convincing, mainly due to their poor finish. Slovakia, on the other hand, did surprisingly well in the tournament´s first stage, securing their spot in the final 16 after progressing from a very tough group. Germany will be clear favourites of this encounter but Slovakia are sure to put up a good fight – just like they did in a friendly match prior to the tournament when they beat Germany 3:1. Starting at 6 PM (CET), the duel Germany vs. Slovakia will take place at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Lille.

Germany

Germany failed to impress in both their qualifiers and the preparation for EURO 2016 but they are known to be extremely successful at tournaments, which was one of the reasons why the German team was still regarded as the main favourite prior to the championship. After the group stage, Low´s men remain unbeaten but the performances they gave in the group matches were quite disappointing. After claiming a hard-earned victory over Ukraine in their opener, Germany were held to a goalless draw by Poland and they finished their group campaign with a narrow 1:0 win over the group´s outsiders Northern Ireland. Obviously, the feared German team are not in their best shape at EURO 2016 and they might have a hard time reaching their medal goals. However, they still should be able to defeat Slovakia in the round of 16 as they have a much stronger and more experienced team than their rivals.

Slovakia

After being drawn into the Group B together with England, Russia and Wales, the Slovakian team were not expected to make it to the tournament´s next stage. To make things even worse for Slovakia, they suffered an unfortunate defeat at the hands of Wales in their opener. But the Slovaks are a team of fighters who do not give up easily and they prove their determination to succeed at the tournament in their next match when they beat Russia. With this morale-boosting triumph in bag, Slovakia needed just one more point to secure their spot in the knock-out stage. Kozak´ s men were to face off the group´s strongest team England in their final group match and although they failed to give as courageous and confident showing as they put in against Russia, they still managed to claim the coveted draw and qualify for the round of 16. To stand a chance against Germany though, the Slovaks need to be more creative in the midfield and more dangerous in the offense.

Summary

The Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Lille will host what is likely to be a great but somewhat hard-to-predict match, featuring a round of 16 clash between Germany and Slovakia. Judging by the main eleven quality of these two teams, the Germans should definitely have the upper hand in the game but despite having plenty of talent in their squad, they look like a somewhat disorganized and tired team. Slovakia might not have that many football stars in their outfit (they actually have just one – Marek Hamsik) but they can take advantage of their strong team spirit. Will the Germans meet the expectations and claim a win in this encounter? Or will Slovakia manage to repeat the glorious victory over their rivals they picked up in a recent friendly match? We will know by Sunday night.
