EURO 2016: Northern Ireland-Germany

Northern Ireland are looking to prepare a big upset for the reigning world champions Germany in what looks like one of the most one-sided games at EURO 2016. Northern Ireland, one of the tournament´s biggest underdogs, will take on the German giants in the final Group C match. Judging by the quality of these two teams´ main elevens, Northern Ireland should not stand a chance against the star-studded Germans but the Green and White Army have already staged a big surprise when they beat Ukraine in the group. Starting at 6 PM (CET), the duel Northern Ireland vs. Germany will be played at Parc des Princes in Paris.

Northern Ireland

Prior to the tournament, Northern Ireland impressed with their stunning 12-game unbeaten run, which was noticed by other EURO 2016 participants. Despite this remarkable achievement, few Northern Irish fans thought the team could make it to the knock-out stage. Yet, O´Neill´s side still have a good chance of progressing from the group after they pulled off a surprising victory over Ukraine in their second game. With this unexpected win in bag, Northern Ireland are now guaranteed a minimum third place finish but if they happen to steal any points from Germany, they might even claim the runners-up spot. The British are renowned for their extremely defensive style that sometimes drives their opponents´ attackers mad but in the game against Ukraine, the Green and White Army proved they have some quality in the attacking department too. However, the Germans are much stronger than both of their previous rivals, making the Tuesday clash an incredibly challenging encounter for Northern Ireland.

Germany

Germany failed to impress in both their qualifiers and the preparation for EURO 2016 but they are known to be extremely successful at tournaments, which was one of the reasons why the German team was still regarded as the main favourite prior to the championship. After the first two rounds of the group stage, Germany have been still unbeaten but the performance they gave in their matches against Ukraine (2:0) and Poland (0:0) were rather unconvincing. Low´s men did dominate the field in both games, controlling the ball possession but they seem to have troubles with goal scoring. Against Poland, for example, they took massive 16 shots on goal but only 3 of them actually hit the target. With four points they gained in these two matches and the Tuesday match against Northern Ireland in hand, Germany are very likely to qualify for the round of 16 but if they are drawn against some other top teams such as Spain or France, they might have serious troubles reaching their medal goals. Yet, the Germans should earn an easy win over the Northern Ireland in their last group duel.

Summary

As one of the tournament´s debutants, Northern Ireland were not expected to produce any major achievement at EURO 2016 but after beating Ukraine in their second group match, this little country have a good chance of advancing to the next stage. Looking to finally give a performance their fans have been waiting for so long, Germany are not going to take their rivals lightly as they also need to claim some points to make sure they will make an appearance in the play-offs. Northern Ireland will surely rely on their ultra-defensive tactic but with respect to the quality of the German attacking line, it would be a true shocker if Germany did not win this game.
