EURO 2016: Ukraine-Poland

On Tuesday, the Group C will be wrapped up with two final games Ukraine vs. Poland and Northern Ireland vs. Germany. Failing to claim any points in their previous two matches, Ukraine became the first team to be certain to get eliminated in the group stage. Consequently, the Ukrainians will only play for their pride in their final encounter with Poland. The Poles, on the other hand, have been successful with their campaign, claiming one win and one draw. With a plenty of quality in all departments, Poland definitely look like the team to win this match. Starting at 6 PM (CET), the clash between Ukraine and Poland will be played at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille.

Ukraine

Encouraged by their good run of results prior to the tournament, Ukraine wanted to prove their form at EURO 2016. In the opener, the team faced off the biggest favourites of the group as well as the entire championship Germany so the defeat (0:2) they suffered in the match was considered little disappointment. In their next duel though, the Ukrainians were expected to produce a much better result against the group´s outsiders Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, Fomenko´s men put in a dismal showing in the game, surprisingly losing to the British (0:2 again). Combined with some other unfavourable results in the group, this frustrating failure shattered their hopes of qualifying for the next stage of the tournament. Therefore, Ukraine might lack motivation in their final duel as not even a win over Poland would get them to the play-offs. Historically, Ukraine keep a healthy record against the Poles but their opponents now have a stronger and more in-form team, which makes them the favourites of the fixture.

Poland

Poland have been doing great at the European championship so far. In their opener, Nawalka´s men met the expectations when they defeated Northern Ireland 1:0. The final result might not look overly convincing but in fact, Poland totally dominated the game and it was only due to the extreme efforts the British put in their defence that the Poles did not score more goals. The second game had a different course though. Facing the reigning world champions Germany, the Poles were under pressure in the match. But the Polish team showed their defensive brilliance, holding the tournament´s favourites to a goalless draw. Thanks to this achievement, Poland proved they can be a real match even for the strongest European heavyweights, which might greatly boost their morale and confidence ahead of the knock-out stage. Well-organized in the defence and very dangerous in the offence led by one of the world´s best attackers Lewandowski, Poland are in a great shape and they should win their final group game against ailing Ukraine.

Summary

The iconic Velodrome Stadium in Marseille will become the site of an interesting clash between the last EURO hosts Ukraine and Poland. In the past years, Ukraine used to have the upper hand in these matches but now the tables are turned. Suffering defeats in both of their previous games, Ukraine are sure to end their campaign in the group stage while Poland have given a solid performance in their matches and they already have one foot in the knock-out stage. To find out if the Poles seal their advancement with a win over Ukraine, we will have to wait until Tuesday night.
