EURO 2016: Russia-Wales

The Group B will be wrapped up with an interesting clash between Russia and Wales who will battle it out for qualification for the knock-out stage of the tournament. Currently sitting in the last place, Russia are the group´s only team without a win as they drew in their first game against England and later succumbed to Slovakia. Yet, if the Russians pick up a victory in their last match, they might still finish third or even second and secure their spot in the round of 16. After their initial win over Slovakia, Wales are in better position ahead of their last duel but only a win will guarantee them automatic qualification. Kicking off at 9 PM (CET), the Group B bout Russia vs. Wales will be played at the Municipal Stadium in Toulouse.

Russia

Russia travelled to France without several of their key players but the team were still considered the second biggest favourites of their group behind England. Nevertheless, Russia´s EURO 2016 campaign has been quite disappointing so far. After the first two rounds, Slutsky´s men have just one point they earned in a lucky draw against England. In their last match, Russia failed to deliver against Slovakia who won the game 2:1. With their appearance in the knock-out stage hanging by a thread, Russia now hope to pull off a strong win over Wales in their last group fixture. Struggling in all departments, the Russians have just one reason to be optimistic about the Monday match – the head-to-head statistics. Out of the four games Russia have played against Wales so far, they won three and drew in one. Let us see if the Russians keep up the highly positive record and claim another win over Wales.

Wales

One of the tournament´s debutants, Wales were not expected to make it to the knock-out stage but the impressive victory they produced in their opener against Slovakia suggested the Welsh might well exceed these sceptical expectations. The Dragons gave a solid performance in their second game against England too but this time around, they failed to claim any points in the match. Bale put Wales in front thanks to his 42nd-minute free kick goal but things changed in the second half as substitute Vardy equalized the score and Sturridge completed the glorious overturn deep into the stoppage time. Eventually, Wales lost the second game 1:2, which means they have to beat Russia in their last group clash to qualify automatically for the tournament´s next stage. With their Nr.1 goalkeeper Hennessey back in the goal, the Welsh team are determined to finish their group campaign in a victorious fashion.

Summary

With all of its four teams still hoping for advancement, the Group B is yet to be decided. With just one point, the Russians are now in the worst position but a win over Wales in their last game would probably still send them to the knock-out stage. On the other hand, a draw or a loss would put an end to their EURO 2016 campaign for sure. With that said, Russia will be desperate pushing for goals, possibly creating room for Wales´ counters. Therefore, there is a good chance that Bale, who is often considered the world´s fastest footballer, will add some goals to his tally in this game. To find out the result of this interesting encounter, we will have to wait until Monday night.
