EURO 2016: France-Albania

France are looking to clinch another victory in their EURO 2016 campaign that would secure them a spot in the knock out stage as they will host Albania on Wednesday night. The hosts are heading into the fixture as huge favourites but Albania might not be as easy target as they seem. The Balkan side delivered a surprisingly good performance in their opener against Switzerland and they will surely try to impress in their upcoming game against the star-packed French too. Starting at 9 PM (CET), the Group A clash France versus Albania will be played at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille.

France

Despite having problems with their defensive line due to a number of absences caused by injuries, France still have a great team, ranking among the biggest candidates to win the gold medal. The French started their run in an opener against Romania but the showing they produced in the game was far from what their fans had expected. Deschamps´ put a lot of effort and dedication in the game but some of them were just too nervous to play their best football. The Romanians proved to be an equal match for the French favourites who took the lead via Giroud but just a few minutes later, the score was levelled after Stancu converted a penalty. Fortunately for Les Blues, France had Dimitri Payet, the best player of the game, who scored a stunning late winner for his team. Upon scoring the goal, Payet even broke down in tears of joy, proving how emotional the game was for the French players. The team´s coach was happy that his men won the match but he was disappointed about some of his players´ performance. Let us see if the lucky win boosted the French side´s morale and confidence and they will be more impressive in the Wednesday fixture.

Albania

For Albania, just the qualification for the tournament itself was a major success but the performance they gave in their opener against Switzerland suggests their spot at EURO 2016 is more than deserved. The Albanians did not start the debut well though. After five minutes, they let the Swiss scored an easy goal after a corner kick. Since then, however, the Balkans asserted their surprising authority on the pitch, getting the favourites under pressure. Unfortunately for Di Biasi´s squad, Albania was soon sent to ten as their captain and key player Lorik Cana received a red card in the 36th minute. Yet, the Albanian team kept on being a permanent threat to the Swiss defence, creating several good chances to score. None of them were converted to a goal though, leaving Albania to lose the game. Despite being defeated by the Swiss, Albania earned acclaim for the impressive and courageous showing they gave in the game. In their next match, Albania will face off France who will be even harder to beat. Also, the Albanians will be without Cana again as he will be suspended from the game due to the red card he received in the opener.

Summary

The French kicked off what they hope will be their triumphal run at EURO 2016 with a win over Romania but the performance they delivered in the fixture was rather unconvincing. With a lot to atone for, Pogba and co. are now determined to show their true quality in their next match against the outsiders Albania. With all the important factors including outfit quality, current form, head-to-head statistics and amount of experience being on the French side, anything but a clear-cut victory of France would be a huge surprise. To find out the outcome of this fixture, we will have to wait until Wednesday night.
