EURO 2016: Romania-Switzerland



The second match scheduled for Wednesday will offer an attractive clash between two rivals who are expected to fight for the runners-up spot in the Group A – Romania and Switzerland. In their openers, these two sides did very differently. While the Romanians gave a courageous showing against the hosts France, losing the game at the very end of the game, Switzerland failed to impress in their match against the underdogs Albany although they did clinch the coveted win. Knowing another defeat would probably cause them to end their campaign in the group stage, Romania are sure to do their hardest to beat the Swiss in the upcoming duel that will take place at 6 PM (CET) at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Romania did not bring as formidable team to France as they used to have at some of the previous championships but considering their group rivals, they are still expected to fight for their spot in the knock out stage. Led by coach Iordanescu, the team kicked off their EURO 2016 campaign with a highly prestigious battle against one of the biggest favourites France and – despite being clear underdogs in the fixture – they delivered a very good performance in the opener. France took the lead in the game through Giroud but Romana equalized just a few minutes later after Stancu converted a penalty kick. Tricolori were very close to claiming a 1:1 draw but at the very end of the match, French midfielder and the best player of the match Payet scored a stunning goal from long distance, giving his team the coveted win. Nevertheless, Romania gave a very confident and disciplined showing in the game and if they keep up with this performance in the Wednesday clash against Switzerland, they will have a good chance of claiming their first points.



Switzerland



Switzerland are one of the teams who have grown a great deal over the past years. Well aware of their current squad quality, the Swiss headed into the tournament hoping to make it to the round of 16 at least. With several renowned players including Xhaka, Shaqiri and Lichsteiner in their outfit, this Alpine country was assumed to finish in the runners-up spot in the group behind France. However, their opener against the group outsiders Albany suggested Switzerland might have a hard time reaching the place. The Swiss took the lead as early as in the 5th minute but since then, it was the underestimated Albanians who dominated the game – despite having been sent to ten after the captain Cana was sent off. Yet, Switzerland managed to defend the lead until the end of the match, securing a narrow and somewhat undeserved 1:0 win. The team´s coach Petkovic knows that such a passive and bland performance could hardly be enough to outplay their next opponents Romania and he will surely urge his players to give a better showing on Wednesday.



Summary



The Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris will be the site of a thrilling and possibly very tight clash as it will host the Group A game between Romania and Switzerland. In terms of individual quality, the Swiss should have the upper hand but Romania were more impressive in their opener and they boast a healthy record against the Swiss, winning most of the recent head-to-head matches. Will Romania claim their first win at the tournament? Or will it be the Swiss who will be more satisfied with the outcome of the match? We will know by Wednesday night.
