Premier League: Arsenal FC – Liverpool FC

The most attractive clash of the Premier League´s opening round will take place in London where the Gunners will pit their strength against one of their biggest rivals Liverpool. Both of these sides spent significant amounts of money on their summer signings and they are both expected to do well this year. Usually, clashes between Arsenal and Liverpool are very enjoyable and offer high numbers of goals (the last head-to-head encounter of these two sides, for example, resulted in a 3:3 draw) so we are likely to be up for a great game. Starting at 5 PM (CET), the Sunday match Arsenal vs. Liverpool will be played at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal FC

Arsenal had a good chance of claiming the league title last year as they did better than all of their traditional rivals such as Chelsea and both Manchester teams but eventually, the Gunners had to bow to Leicester who topped their inspirational campaign with the ultimate trophy. Prior to the beginning of the new season, Arsenal brought several new players in the team, including Xhaka (Borussia Monchengladbach), Holding (Bury FC) and Asano (Hiroshima). Some of the team´s mainstays such as Giroud, Koscielny and Ozil played for their national teams at EURO 2016 and they have been resting since then. Nevertheless, even without them, the Gunners produced great results in their preparatory duels, beating all MLS All-Stars (2:1), Chivas (3:1), Viking FK (8:0) and Manchester City (3:2). The only non-victorious result they claimed in the friendlies was a 1:1 draw against Lens. Obviously, Arsenal are in a good shape at the beginning of the new season and they should prove it in the prestigious Sunday clash against Liverpool.

Liverpool FC

Despite hiring renowned German coach Jurgen Klopp amidst the past season, Liverpool failed to meet any of their original goals, experiencing yet another unsuccessful campaign topped with the disappointing 8th-place finish. To make sure that the upcoming season will be better, the club´s management spent lot of money of new players. The Reds recruited Karius (Mainz 05), Klavan (Augsburg), Mane (Southampton) and Matip (Schalke 04). On Mane, the Senegalese winger, the team spent whopping £34 million but the money seems to pay off as Mane has been a great addition to the tea so far. Similarly to their London rivals, Liverpool also did very well in their preparatory matches, losing just to Chelsea (0:1) while claiming wins over Milan (2:0), Roma (2:1) and - most famously – Barcelona (4:0!). Considering these impressive results produced in games against high profile opponents from all over Europe, Liverpool seem to be well-prepared and confident prior to the next season.

Summary

The Emirates Stadium in London will be the site of the most stand-out clash of the Premier League´s first round as it will host a highly prestigious battle between Arsenal and Liverpool. Based on their last season´s performances, Arsenal should be clear favourites of the duel but Liverpool were excellent in their recent friendlies and their current form seems to be formidable so we can expect a tightly contested fixture. Will Arsenal make the home advantage count and kick off their new league campaign with a win? Or will the Reds keep up with the great performance they gave in their warm-up duels and beat their London rivals? We will know by Sunday night.
