Friendly Match: Germany – Finland

The reigning world champions, Germany will play just one warm-up duel before kicking off their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign. On Wednesday, they will lock horns with Finland in what looks like an easy friendly encounter for them but might be a lot more challenging in fact. Despite all their indisputable quality, the Germans have failed to beat the Finnish in all of their past four head-to-head games as they all ended up in draws. Let us see if they meet the role of strong favourites of the clash and manage to clinch a win this time. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the friendly game between Germany and Finland will be played at the Borussia Park Stadium in Monchengladbach, Germany.

Germany

Although Germany were the biggest favourites of the European Championship hosted by France, they were not as impressive at the tournament as most of their fans had expected. They did progressed from the group with ease and they had no troubles knocking out Slovakia in the round of 16, but there was a huge amount of luck involved in their nerve-wrecking penalty shoot-out triumph over Italy in the quarter final and they were deservedly eliminated by the hosts in the semi final. By Germany´s standard, the semi final appearance at EURO 2016 was considered quite disappointing and there are no doubts Low will do his best to prepare his men better for defending the world cup title. Germany will begin their qualifying campaign with a match against Norway so they arranged another Scandinavian side as their opponents for the one and only pre-qualifying warm-up game.

Finland

Although they were drawn into one of the easiest qualifying groups, Finland failed to make it to the final tournament. However, Backe´s team still arranged a number of friendly matches to keep themselves busy during the first half of the year. Unfortunately, Finland did not win a single game out of the five friendlies they have played in the recent months. They lost to Iceland (0:1) in January and were defeated by Poland (0:5) and Norway (0:2) in March. In June, the Finnish played another two preparatory duels in which they drew with Belgium (1:1) and got beaten by Italy (0:2). Considering this dismal recent record, Finland look like huge underdogs ahead of the Wednesday encounter with the German giants but there is one thing that suggests Finland might actually not be as chanceless as it seems. The Scandinavians have managed to hold Germany to a draw in each of their past four head-to-head games.

Summary

Out of the friendly matches scheduled for Wednesday, the one between Germany and Finland promises to be a highly entertaining fixture as the home team are ready to deploy their strongest line-up based on world-class players such as Neuer, Howedes, Kroos, Ozil and Muller. What makes this game special is the fact that it will be the last match for the team´s icon Bastian Schweinsteiger who had already announced his retirement in the national team. Will Germany meet the expectations and break the odd draw series against Finland with a win? Or will this game result in yet another tie? We will know by Wednesday night.
