Champions League: Atlético Madrid – Bayern Munich

There are no doubts about what Champions League game will draw most attention on Wednesday – it will certainly be the hotly-anticipated clash between the last year´s finalists Atlético Madrid and the German giants Bayern Munich. These two sides met in the semi-final stage of the tournament last year when Atlético emerged as surprising winners of the series. Looking to avenge the defeat, Bayern want to win the Wednesday match but Atlético are yet to taste defeat in the new season and they will surely try to extend their unbeaten run. Kicking off at 8:45 PM (CET), the Group D blockbuster Atlético Madrid versus Bayern Munich will take place at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético experienced a rather disappointing start to the league season after they were held to draws by both Alavés (1:0) and Leganés (0:0) in the first two rounds but since then, the team have been on an impressive run. Colchoneros clinched their first La Liga win of the new season in the third round after they thumped Celta Vigo 4:0. In their next duels, they beat strong Dutch side PSV Eindhoven (1:0) in the Champions League opener, destroyed Sporting Gijon in La Liga (5:0) and claimed a highly valued 1:1 draw at FC Barcelona. In their last match, Simeone´s men earned a 1:0 win over La Coruna, keeping in close touch with both Real Madrid and Barcelona at the top of the league´s table. Atlético have been unbeaten as they claimed four wins and three draws in their first seven matches of the new season but to keep the record after their Wednesday clash against highly in-form Bayern, they need to deliver an unusually strong performance.

Bayern Munich

Similarly to the last couple of years, Bayern have been enjoying a superb start to the season. Having won all of their first eight competitive games, Munich have only conceded one goal so far, which means the team´s defence has been in an astonishing form. But Bayern´s attacking department has been also brilliant. The Bavarians have already produced several crushing victories including the 5:0 win over Jena in the German Cup, the 6:0 victory over Bremen in Bundesliga and the 5:0 win over Rostov in the Champions League. On the other hand, we should not forget that Bayern were just as dominating before they got eliminated by Atlético in the Champions League semi-final last year. This time around, the teams will lock horns in the group stage so even if one of them lose, they both will still have a good chance of progressing further as first two teams of each group qualify for the knock-out stage. Yet, it does not reduce Bayern´s determination to win the fixture and avenge the defeat from the last year.

Summary

The Wednesday clash between two European heavyweights Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich promises to be a highly entertaining and possibly also very tight affair. The Germans have taken the new season by storm as they won every single match they have played so far. Atlético might not hold as brilliant record as their opponents but they are famous for producing stunning performances in matches against some of the strongest teams such as Bayern. Will the Madrid side make the home advantage count just like they did in April and beat Munich again? Or will it be the Bavarians who will have the upper hand this time? We will know by Wednesday night.
