Champions League: Manchester City - FC Steaua Bucharest
Out of all the Champions League fourth qualifiers, there is just one that has been already decided in the first leg – the one between Manchester City and Steaua Bucharest. After a hammering 5:0 win claimed on Steaua´s soil, the Citizens are almost sure to have their spot in the Champions League group stage. However, as they will play the rematch in front of their home crowd, they will certainly try to please their fans with another great showing. Kicking off at 8:45 PM (CET), the clash between Manchester City and Steaua Bucharest will take place at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
Manchester City have been excellent in the new season so far. Their initial 2:1 home win over Sunderland in the Premier League opener might have not looked that impressive but since then, the Citizens have been on a stunning run. Manchester totally dominated the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Steaua Bucharest who they destroyed 5:0. The Argentine sniper Sergio Aguero was the man of the match as he scored a hat-trick. In fact, Aguero could have scored at least five goals in the game but he missed two spot-kicks. However, missing those penalties had little impact on this player´s confidence as he put the ball on the spot again in Manchester´s next league against Stoke. This time, Aguero was successful with his kick, helping his team to earn another glorious victory. The Citizens beat Stoke 4:1and they seem to be gaining an impressive momentum under Pep Guardiola. Considering their superb form, anything but another great City´s win would be a big surprise in the Wednesday rematch against Bucharest.
FC Steaua Bucharest
Steaua kicked off the season with a series of wins in the domestic league and they delivered a solid performance in their Champions League qualifiers against Sparta Prague. Consequently, the Romanians were quite confident prior to their first match against Manchester City and they were hoping to produce a result that would keep their chances of qualifying alive. Of course, Steaua were huge underdogs of the game but not even the most pessimistic fans could have foreseen how woefully the match would eventually pan out for them. Bucharest were totally outplayed by the Citizens in every department and the final result (0:5) was actually still quite merciful for Bucharest who could have easily conceded several more goals. With their confidence badly affected by the failure, Steaua then failed to beat their city rivals Dinamo in the hotly anticipated league derby on Saturday. Obviously, Steaua´s good form they had in the first matches of the season is gone and their priority for the upcoming duel against Manchester City will probably be just to avoid another crushing defeat.
Manchester City gave a spectacular display against the 26-time Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier and they are ready to seal their advancement to the group stage with another impressive win. The new coach Guardiola might make some changes to the main eleven as he is likely to rest some of his key players but the Citizens have enormous quality in their squad and even if they created their starting line-up from substitutes, the team would still be strong favourites of the rematch. To find out if Manchester extend their current winning streak, we will have to wait until Wednesday night.Oddsring
