Champions League: AS Monaco – Fenerbahce SK

Out of the ten rematches of the Champions League third qualifying round scheduled for Wednesday, the one between Monaco and Fenerbahce is likely to be the most attractive as it will feature a clash of two renowned sides both of whom still have a good chance of progressing further. What makes this tie even more interesting is the fact that two Manchester United icons Robin van Persie (currently playing in Fenerbahce) and Radamel Falcao (currently playing in Monaco) will play against each other in the game. Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the duel AS Monaco vs. Fenerbahce SK will take place at Stade Louis II in Monaco.

AS Monaco

The former Champions League finalists, Monaco finished third in the last season of the highest French competition Ligue 1 (behind PSG and Lyon), which secured them a spot in the third qualifying round of the Champions League this year. Last season, Jardim´s squad made it past this stage after they eliminated Young Boys Bern (7:1 on aggregate) but they were knocked out of the tournament by Spanish side Valencia in the next round (3:4 on aggregate). As Monaco are a highly ambitious team who actually made it all the way up to the Champions League final in 2004, anything but an advancement to the group stage would be considered a failure this year. To qualify for the next round of the tournament though, they need to beat Turkish side Fenerbahce in the second leg of the third qualifying round as they suffered a one-goal loss in the opening match in Turkey. Yet, with the support of their home crowds and considerable quality of their outfit, they should be able to claim a win in the rematch.

Fenerbahce SK

Fenerbahce is one of the great Istanbul trio and they place at the top of the league table regularly but their international campaign has not been very impressive in the last couple of years. In fact, this Istanbul team failed to clinch their spot in the Champions League group stage in any of the past four seasons, which is a disappointing result for this renowned side. Last year, Fenerbahce had to exit the most prestigious European competition as early as in the third qualifying round after they got eliminated by Ukrainian team Donetsk. This time around, their chances of progressing to the fourth qualifying round are better as they managed to record a 2:1 win in their first battle against AS Monaco. The Nigerian striker Emineke became the hero of the game as he scored both Fenerbahce´s goals, giving his team a slight advantage ahead of the rematch. However, to make it past Monaco, they will still need to give their very best performance as the Ligue 1 team are sure to make the home advantage count and do their hardest to overturn the deficit and win the rematch.

Summary

The Louis II Stadium in Monaco is about to witness a great football encounter as it will host a top quality match between the home team and Fenerbahce Istanbul on Wednesday. Both of the rivals have many talented players in their squads and they were busy in the summer transfer window, trying to further strengthen their teams. The Turks had the upper hand in the first leg as they clinched a 2:1 win but Monaco are confident they have what it takes to overturn this series and emerge victorious out of the tie. Will they really make it? We will know by Wednesday night.
