World Cup 2018 Qualifier: Hungary – Switzerland

Out of the World Cup 2018 qualifiers scheduled for Friday, the Group B clash between Hungary and Switzerland looks like a game no to miss as both of these sides made it to the knock-out stage at the EURO 2016 and they both look to secure their spots at the upcoming World Cup. The Hungarians experienced a disappointing start to their qualifying campaign as they were held to a draw by one of the group´s outsiders Faroe Islands so the team have a lot to atone for in their next game. The Swiss, on the other hand, did great in their opener, claiming a surprising win over the newly-crowned European Champions Portugal. This is also one of the reasons why Switzerland are slightly favoured to win the Friday clash that starts at 8:45 PM (CET).

Hungary

Hungary had a hard time securing their spot at the EURO 2016 and they were not very impressive in the preparatory stage either, which – combined with the lack of top players in their squad – made them one of the championship´s outsiders. However, the Magical Magyars delivered a solid display in most of their matches and they even progressed from what was generally regarded one of the toughest groups. Hungary definitely proved their quality at the European Championship and they will surely try to earn their spot at the upcoming World Cup where they would like to impress as well. But Storck´s men failed to keep the form they had in France after they only produced a goalless draw in their qualifying opener against Faroe Islands. Determined to improve their reputation, the Hungarians will face Switzerland in their next game but claiming a win over the in-form Swiss team will be very difficult.

Switzerland

The Swiss currently have what is widely considered one of their best national teams ever but they failed to prove their worth at the European Championship hosted by France. In fact, the only team Switzerland managed to beat was one of the tournament´s biggest outsiders Albania. In their other group matches, they drew with Romania (1:1) and France (0:0) while losing to Poland in the round of 16. On the other hand, the current Switzerland´s national team is still very young and some of its key players such as Shaqiri, Xhaka or Embolo still have their best years ahead of them, which suggests the team´s performance might considerably improve in the future. Enriched with their newly-gained experience, Switzerland produced an excellent start to their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign as they beat the new European Champions Portugal (2:0). The Portuguese were without their key player Ronaldo but they would probably lose the game anyway as the Swiss delivered a very good performance in the fixture and they totally deserved the win.

Summary

The qualifying Group B is one of a few groups that have not been panning out as they were expected. The group´s biggest favourites Portugal surprisingly lost to Switzerland and the ambitious Hungarians only drew with Faroe Islands. While the first place is still expected to be claimed by the Portuguese, the runners-up spot might be fought for by all the remaining teams (with the exception of Andorra, probably). Therefore, the outcome of the upcoming clash between Hungary and Switzerland might have a huge impact on the happenings in the group. Will the Swiss prove their growing form and emerge victorious out of the match? Or will the Hungarians make up for the points they lost in their opener? To find out, we will have to wait until Friday night.
