World Cup 2018 qualifier: Slovakia - England

Out of the Group F qualifiers scheduled for Sunday, the one between Slovakia and England promises to be the most entertaining game. England are looking to kick off a new campaign under a new coach after Sam Allardyce replaced former manager Roy Hodgson. Two months after suffering the humiliating defeat at the hands of Iceland in the infamous EURO 2016 round of 16 match, England are determined to qualify for the World Cup 2018 to improve their reputation. They will begin their quest in Slovakia where they will take on the home side who held them to a draw at the European Championship. Starting at 6 PM (CET), the World Cup 2018 qualifier Slovakia vs. England will be played in the city of Trnava, Slovakia.

Slovakia

One of the EURO 2016 debutants, Slovakia were not expected to progress from the group stage in France but the team delivered a solid performance in the group, beating Russia (2:1) and drawing with England (0:0). Consequently, the Slovaks finished third in the group, just one point behind England. However, they proved to be no match for the Germans in the round of 16 as they lost 0:3 to the reigning world champions. Slovakia now begin their quest for what would be their second World Cup appearance as an independent nation but their current squad is different from the one featured at the EURO 2016 with several players such as Mucha, Stoch or Weiss having been omitted. The Slovaks will heavily rely on their brightest star Marek Hamsik who was in a brilliant shape in France. Slovakia are the underdogs of the Sunday match but if they pull together, they might steal some points from the English favourites.

England

England´s new coach Sam Allardyce must really trust his men as he turned down the option to play a friendly game ahead of the beginning of the World Cup 2018 qualification. Therefore, Allardyce´s first match at the helm of the English national team will be the Sunday clash against Slovakia – a team they only drew with at the EURO 2016. The Three Lions gave an unconvincing performance in that forgettable goalless draw, followed by the frustrating 1:2 loss to the outsiders from Iceland in the next match. Now, determined to atone for the hurts of their summer shambles, England are looking to impress in their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign. The squad remains almost intact with Wayne Rooney being the captain and all the feared strikers such as Vardy, Kane and Walcott ready to score. England are known to be very successful in qualifiers of all types, which is one of the reasons why they are the favourites of the match.

Summary

Slovakia and England, two rivals who met at the EURO 2016 some two months ago, are to lock horns again as they will face each other in their World Cup 2018 opening qualifier. Slovakia managed to hold England to a draw in their last head-to-head encounter but the remaining three duels between these sides were all won by the English. Will Slovakia, led by the Napoli superstar Hamsik, claim their first-ever win over England? Or will it be the visitors who will have the upper hand in the game? We will know by Sunday night.
