EURO 2016: Hungary-Belgium

The final Sunday round of 16 clash will offer an interesting duel between Hungary and Belgium. Lacking any renowned players, the Hungarians have been on the biggest surprises at the tournament so far. Unbeaten in all three group duels, Hungary emerged as the winners of the Group F in which they were originally considered one of the biggest outsiders. In the round of 16, the Magical Magyars are up for a very challenging encounter though, taking on one of the tournament´s favourites Belgium. The Belgian team bounced back from their initial defeat suffered at the hands of Italy and they now seem to be back in shape. Starting at 9 PM (CET), the battle Hungary vs. Belgium will be played at the Municipal Stadium in Toulouse.

Hungary

Hungary had a hard time securing their spot at the tournament and they were not very impressive in the preparatory stage either, which – combined with the lack of top players in their squad – made them one of the championship´s outsiders. However, the performance they gave in their opener against Austria suggested these presumptions might have been completely wrong. The Hungarians put in a very disciplined and confident showing against the Austrians, claiming an easy 2:0 win over them. In their second game, Storck´s men shared the spoils with Iceland (1:1) to save another spectacular showing for their final group clash against Portugal. Hungary led three times in this fascinating clash but Portugal always came back as the match resulted in a highly attractive 3:3 slugfest. In total, Hungary scored as many as six goals in the group stage, which is the highest score of all teams (along with Wales). Encouraged by these great results, the Hungarians will surely try to deliver another strong performance against Belgium and make it to the quarter-final.

Belgium

After suffering a 0:2 defeat in their opener against Italy, Belgium were heavily criticised for their overly individualistic approach. Obviously, the Belgian players learnt their lesson from the criticism as they gave a considerably better showing in the remaining matches. In the second game, Wilmots´ men claimed a comfortable 3:0 win over the Irish before beating Sweden 1:0 in their final group duel. Finally, the Belgian team seem to be playing what they are supposed to play considering the enormous strength of their starting line-up. The team´s brightest stars such as Hazard, de Bruyne, Fellaini or Lukaku now work for the team, which has had a huge, positive impact on their game. Consequently, Wilmots´ squad will be clear favourites of the Sunday match against Hungary and it would be a surprise if they did not make it to the next play-off round. Moreover, history is on their side too – Belgium won four out of the last five head-to-head matches against Hungary.

Summary

Belgium seem to be back on track after they succumbed to Italy in the opening match. Facing off Hungary in the round of 16, they are looking to grab a third consecutive win after beating Ireland and Sweden in their last two group matches. On paper, Hungary might look like an easy target but their campaign has been unexpectedly impressive so far. Will Belgium have what it takes to put an end to the Hungary´s unbeaten run? Or Will the Magical Magyars put in another fabulous performance and beat the Belgian favourites? We will know by Sunday night.
