EURO 2016: Hungary-Portugal



On Wednesday, two final matches will conclude the Group F that took a very unexpected turn. The biggest favourites of the group, Portugal and Austria are currently sitting in the last two spots while the outsiders Hungary and Iceland are occupying the top two places. Portugal have been extremely unlucky at the tournament so far, wasting an incredible number of chances to score in both of their previous duels. The Hungarians put in a very disciplined and confident showing against the Austrians, claiming an easy 2:0 win over them. In their second game, Storck´s men faced off Iceland who had prepared a big upset for the Portuguese in the previous match so the Hungarians knew they were up for a tough battle. The Magical Magyars were down 0:1 in the duel after Sigurdsson converted a penalty in the 40th minute but they fought back to equalize the score at the end of the match. Topping the group with four points, they are now in a great position to seal their advancement with a draw or a win over Portugal.



Portugal



Boasting one of the strongest teams at the tournament, Portugal have a full right to have medal ambitions at EURO 2016 but so far, the star-studded team´s results have been disappointing. There are no complaints about their performance but Portugal´s finish need to be a way more effective. In both of their previous matches, Selecao totally dominated the pitch, controlling the ball possession and surpassing their rivals in all statistics but the goal count. In the matches against Iceland and Austria combined, Portugal racked up incredible 48 shots but only one found the net. Ironically, it is the team´s most iconic player Ronaldo who is most criticized for the dismal finish as he wasted a number of great chances and even failed to convert a penalty kick in the last duel against Austria. Ahead of their final group, Santos´ side are under a huge pressure to clinch a victory. To stand any chance of progressing from the group stage, Portugal simply must win the Wednesday match.



Summary



Luckless Portugal are determined to prove their quality by beating Hungary in their last group fixture. With all key factors including starting line-up quality, current form and head-to-head statistics (seven wins, three draws, no defeat) on their side, the Portuguese will be clear favourites of the Wednesday encounter. In the previous games, both their defence and midfield have worked just fine but the attacking line led by Real Madrid´s star Ronaldo have failed to deliver.
