EURO 2016: Poland-Northern Ireland

Group C fixtures will be opened on Sunday with a game between Poland and Northern Ireland. One of the two biggest favourites to advance from the group, Poland is looking to begin their EURO 2016 campaign with a victory but Northern Ireland, despite being the underdogs of the group, might not be easy to beat as they are heading into the tournament encouraged by some very impressive result they produced in the qualifiers and warm-up duels. Kicking off at 6 PM (CET), the clash Poland vs. Northern Ireland will be played at the Allianz Riviera Stadium in Nice.

Poland

The Polish national team have grown a great deal over the past years. The Poles were drawn into a tough Group D in the EURO 2016 qualifiers, together with Gibraltar, Georgia, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. The reigning world champions, the Germans met the expectations, claiming the top spot in the group but Poland were also successful with their campaign, clinching the runners-up spot just one point behind the Germans. The Poles have been heavily relying on their attacking star Lewandowski from Bayern Munich who has been in a stunning shape this year but the team features several other great players such as Krychowiak, Milik and Zielinski. Poland played six friendlies in their pre-tournament preparation, claiming wins over Iceland (4:2), the Czech Republic (3:1), Serbia (1:0) and Finland (5:0) a draw with Lithuania (0:0) while suffering a defeat by the hands of the Netherlands (1:2). In fact, Nawalka´s men lost just one out of their last nine matches and they are expected to keep up with this great run in their Sunday opener against Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland booked ticket for their very first EURO as surprising group winners surpassing Romania and Hungary in the standings. Prior to the qualification, O´Neill´s squad were not considered one of the favourites but the Green and White Army gave an excellent performance in most of their qualifiers, deservedly claiming the top spot. After their historical advancement to the tournament, the Northern Irish arranged five friendly games to further improve their form and they did very good in those matches too, earning wins over Latvia (1:0), Slovenia (1:0) and Belarus (3:0) and drawing with Wales (1:1) and Slovakia (0:0). Nevertheless, despite all of these recent achievements, the British are still regarded outsiders of their group and seeing them make it to the knock-out stage would be a big surprise. Although Nothern Ireland is the second smallest country at the tournament (after Iceland), thousands of their fans are expected to come to France to support the team, which might be a considerable advantage for them but the Poles, Northern Ireland´s first opponents are also going to have a massive support from their fans.

Summary

An interesting football battle is to be seen at the centre of the renowned French Riviera on Sunday as Poland and Northern Ireland will cross their swords in Nice. The Poles are much more experienced than their rivals and they have one of their very best teams in years, which is why they will be the favourites of the clash but the British side have been unbeaten in their last ten games and they will surely try to impress in what will be their first ever EURO match. Will the Green and White Army manage to extend their unbeaten run in their encounter with Poland? We will know the answer by Sunday night.
