Who is your Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year

Post by LuckyBonkers »

Goal has selected the five best players in the French top flight who were aged 23 or under at the start of the campaign - but who is your favourite? Cast your vote here! In a season without surprises at the top end of the Ligue 1 table, several clubs have showcased exceptional young talent in the French top flight. Our definition of a ‘young player’ is one who was aged 23 or under at the start of the 2015-16 season. So we have selected the six standout starlets and ask you, the reader, to decide…

Ousmane Dembele doesn’t turn 19 until May 15, but he is already one of the division’s top players. Between matches he has been subjected to intense speculation about his future and it’s easy to see why. Dembele’s wonderful technique and style of play are complemented by an ability to deliver the goods – 12 goals and five assists in 23 appearances this season. He is somewhat modest but his precocious talent is already being realised and he is a major candidate for the award.

With 29 starts and 32 appearances in total, Vincent Koziello has been one of the mainstays in a very good season for Nice. Very mature in his play and for his age, Koziello symbolises the style established by coach Claude Puel: short passes, energetic, mobile and comfortable with the ball at his feet (91.2% pass completion ratio in Ligue 1 this season). He is just 5’6” tall and only 20 but he is already an integral player for Nice.

Adrien Rabiot has been highly rated for some time but has experienced an unusual season. After several declarations of discontent over his limited playing time in a star-packed Paris Saint-Germain team, he has profited from a number of injuries to the likes of Marco Verratti and Javier Pastore, making 22 appearances in Ligue 1. The 21-year-old midfielder had been linked with a return to England, where he briefly played for Manchester City’s youth team, and is refusing to discount a summer departure in the event that he loses his place to a fit Verratti. He remains ambitious and has an eye on the Premier League but after impressing in the second half of this season, PSG may try to hang on to the precocious Parisian.

The only player on the list not eligible to play for France, Paris-born Morocco international Sofiane Boufal is arguably Lille’s biggest talent and could go on to be a world beater. He does, however, have a tendency to play for himself over the team, but at 22 there is plenty of time to develop. As it stands he is already an effective first-team player – the attacking midfielder has scored 11 goals and created four more in 27 appearances.

Monaco are a very defensive team so Thomas Lemar should be credited for being able to shine as a creative player. His link-up play is superb and is a threat at set pieces with two of his five Ligue 1 goals this season coming from free-kicks.

My vote go for Sofiane Boufal. "One of the Dogues’ best players is definitely the 22-year-old attacking midfielder Sofiane Boufal, who –during the current season- has scored eleven goals and made four assists. For this reason, many European clubs are after the French-born Moroccan player." This :)
