Serie A: AS Roma – UC Sampdoria

Serie A continues with its third round this weekend, offering a number of great matches, including the Sunday clash between Roma and Sampdoria. The Genoa side were fighting for survival last year but this season might be a way more successful for them as they are currently sitting in the second spot with two wins from two games. The Romans produced a stunning start to the season as they hammered Udinese in the opener but just a few days later, they had to deal with a huge disappointment after they got eliminated from the Champions League. Affected by the failure, they were held to a draw by Cagliari in their next game. With that said, the Sunday match might not be as one-sided as it seems. Starting at 3 PM (CET), the game AS Roma vs. UC Sampdoria will be played at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

AS Roma

With high ambitions for the new season, Roma were very busy during the summer transfer window, signing a number of new players including Salah from Chelsea, Shaarawy from AC Milan and Dzeko from Manchester City. To get the best preparation for the tough battles of the new season, the Wolves arranged multiple friendly games against high profile teams and they did very well in those games. Nevertheless, as impressive as they were in the preparation, Roma suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the beginning of the season after they got knocked out of the Champions League by FC Porto. The frustrated Romans gave an unconvincing performance in their next league duel against the outsiders Cagliari who held them to a 2:2 draw. Therefore, Spalletti probably welcomed the World Cup qualifiers break so that his men could pull themselves together and focus on their game again. If they manage to repeat the performance they produced against Udinese (4:0), they should have no troubles beating Sampdoria too.

UC Sampdoria

Sampdoria enjoyed their most successful era in late 1980s and early 1990s when they also won their one and only Serie A title so far. Since then, the team have failed to produce any significant success, mostly ranking among average or below-average Italian sides. But this season might be different. Sampdoria is now one of just three teams to win both of their opening games, currently placed second. Genoa began their campaign at Empoli where they clinched their first win (1:0). In their second match, Giampaolo´s squad faced Atalanta Bergamo who they eventually outplayed 2:1. While the score of two wins from two games looks impressive, it should not be overrated as both Empoli and Atalanta rank among the league´s biggest underdogs. Therefore, the Sunday encounter with strong AS Roma will be the first real test for Sampdoria. Since Roma have much more quality in their squad, it would be surprising to see Genoa win this match.

Summary

The iconic Olympic Stadium in Rome will host an attractive football match as it will feature a clash between the home side and UC Sampdoria. After Roma failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage, they are likely to focus on their domestic campaign as their priority. The Romans want to rival the reigning champions Juventus this year but to keep up with the Torino giants, they need to win on regular basis. With that said, the home team are only interested in winning the Sunday game against Sampdoria – anything else would be a disappointment for them. Will they really achieve this goal? Or will it be Genoa who will be satisfied with the outcome of the game? We will know by Sunday afternoon.
