UEFA Super Cup: Real Madrid – Sevilla FC

There are no Champions League or Europa League matches to be played this week but football fans still have a big event to look forward to. On Tuesday, the UEFA Super Cup will witness an exciting Spanish battle between Real Madrid (current Champions League winner) and Sevilla FC (current Europa League winner). What makes this duel even more interesting and attractive is the fact that Real Madrid are the most successful team of the Champions League historically (11 titles) while Sevilla boast the most Europa League titles (5). Starting at 8:45 PM (CET), the duel Real Madrid vs. Sevilla FC will be played in Trondheim, Norway.

Real Madrid

Real failed to win La Liga last year, claiming the second spot just one point behind the winners FC Barcelona but they did manage to win the Champions League. Unlike some other European football giants, Real were not too active in the summer transfer window. Therefore, their current squad is almost identical to the one they had last year. However, Los Blancos have had a difficult summer with several of their key players yet to recover from injuries. The team´s brightest star Cristiano Ronaldo is sure to miss the Tuesday game (as well as the first La Liga matches of the new season) while the fitness of all Bale, Benzema, Pepe and Kroos is under question too. Yet, Real managed to produce some impressive results in the pre-season warm-up games including their triumphs over Chelsea (3:2) and Bayern Munich (1:0). Therefore, despite the multiple absences, Real are expected to have the upper hand in the Super Cup encounter with their Spanish rivals Sevilla.

Sevilla FC

Sevilla also enjoyed a good season last year. In the domestic competition, they finished seventh and they produced another glorious triumph in the Europa League after they earned their third consecutive title. In fact, Sevilla won the tournament in 2006 and 2007 as well, meaning they are five-time Europa League champions. Unlike Real Madrid, Sevilla were very busy during the summer transfer window. They lost three of their mainstays - Banega (Inter Milan), Krychowiak (PSG) and Gameiro (Atlético Madrid) but they signed as many as eight new players including Kranevitter and Vietto from Atlético Madrid and Correa z from Sampdoria. Moreover, the former team´s coach Emery was replaced with Jorge Sampaoli. With so many changes to the squad, Sevilla´s performance will greatly depend on how the new players gel together and play as a team. Rojiblancos did very good in their pre-season friendlies but facing star-packed Real Madrid will be a tough challenge for them.

Summary

The Lerkendal Stadium in Rosenborg is about to host a great football game as it will be the site of the EUFA Super Cup clash between Real Madrid and Sevilla FC on Tuesday. These two rivals have already met in this sort of match – Real won the trophy after beating Sevilla 2:0 two years ago. Los Blancos will be the favourites of the game this time too but Sevilla will have a good chance to clinch a win as Real are likely to miss a number of their key players. Will Sevilla take advantage of their rivals´ difficulties to claim the Super Cup trophy? To find out who the winner will be, we will have to wait until Tuesday night.
