Europa League: Manchester United – Zorya Luhansk
The biggest favourites of the Europa League´s group stage, Manchester United are looking to atone for the disappointing result they produced in the opener after they suffered a 0:1 defeat at the hands of the Dutch side Feyenoord Rotterdam. In their next game, the elite Premier League´s team will host one of the tournament´s outsiders, the Ukrainian squad Zorya Luhansk. Manchester have incomparably greater quality in their outfit than their rivals and they are clear favourites of the game but Zorya gave a courageous performance in their opener against Fenerbahce and they will surely try to put a fight against the Manchester giants too. Kicking off at 9:05 PM (CET), the Group A clash between Manchester United and Zorya Luhansk will be played at the iconic Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester.
Manchester ´s form seems to be somewhat fluctuating in the new season. United had a great start marked by four straight wins but then, they suffered three consecutive defeats, which affected the team´s seemingly unshakeable confidence symbolized by its most prominent striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Fortunately for United´s fans, the team appear to be gaining the momentum again after they beat Northampton (3:1) in the League Cup and hammered the reigning Premier League champions Leicester (4:1) in their last league match. Encouraged by the triumphal victory over the Foxes, Manchester are now determined to make up for the loss they suffered in their Europa League opener against Feyenoord as they will host Luhansk in their next game. Currently sitting at the very bottom of the group, United are expected to dominate the match and it would be a huge surprise if they did not claim a win in this fixture.
The current Ukrainian Cup winners, Zorya Luhansk are officially based in the city of Luhansk but for security reasons (ongoing war in eastern Ukraine), the team have been playing their games in Zaporizhia. Zorya reached the Europa League´s final qualifying rounds in the past few seasons but it was not until this year when they finally made it to the group stage after finishing fourth in their domestic league. Luhansk opened their group campaign with an attractive home duel against much more experienced Turkish side Fenerbahce but the home team delivered a confident and well-organized performance against the Turks and they were just seconds away from claiming a win in the match but Fenerbahce were lucky enough to score a last-minute equaliser. Yet, the 1:1 draw they earned in the first round boosted the Ukrainians´ morale and they are now planning to impress with another solid showing at Old Trafford.
On paper, the Thursday Europa league clash between Manchester United and Zorya Luhansk looks like a decided affair. With world-class players in most positions, the English side should totally outplay the inexperienced Ukrainian outsiders. But Manchester´s performances have been alarmingly unstable so far, which suggests the outcome of the upcoming match might not be as one-sided as it seems. Will Mourinho´s star-studded squad really live up to the expectations and claim a thumping win in the game? Or will Luhansk stage a surprise at Old Trafford? We will know by Thursday night.
