Champions League: Paris Saint Germain – Arsenal FC

The Champions League group stage will start on Tuesday, offering a number of great football clashes including the mouth-watering battle between the French champions Paris Saint Germain and English runners-up Arsenal FC. The French side made it all the way up to the quarter final last year and they are looking to reach even further this time. Arsenal, on the other hand, were quite unlucky last season as they were drawn against the Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the round of 16 and they got eliminated by Messi´s squad. With both sides planning to progress as further as possible at the tournament, the Tuesday match PSG vs. Arsenal FC promises to be a thrilling game.

Paris Saint Germain

Paris Saint Germain were quite busy during the summer transfer window. Their former coach Laurent Blanc was replaced by successful Sevilla´s manager Unai Emery and there were also several changes to the squad with the departure of the iconic Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic being the biggest one. PSG have played four competitive games in the new season, claiming two wins, one draw and one defeat, currently placed fourth. Considering how dominant the Parisians were in the previous years, their current start is rather disappointing. The team seem to have troubles with goal coring as Cavani has failed to fill the Ibrahimovic void and the defence is another Emery´s headache with as many as four of the team´s defenders being side-lined with injuries at the moment. Yet, despite all these difficulties, PSG are still slightly favoured to win the Tuesday match but Arsenal will also have a chance to produce a good result in the game.

Arsenal FC

Unlike some other European powerhouses, Arsenal were not overly active during the summer transfer window so their starting line-up for the new season is very similar to the one they employed last year. The Gunners began their Premier League campaign in an attractive duel against FC Liverpool who won the unexpected slug-fest 4:3. In their next game, Arsenal were held to a draw by the reigning champions Leicester so it was not until the third round when they tasted victory for the first time after they beat Watford 3:1. By that time, three of the team´s mainstays Ozil, Giroud and Koscielny returned to the pitch after the holiday they were given following their hard work for their national teams at EURO 2016. With them in the squad, Wenger´s side also managed to clinch an important win over strong Southampton (2:1) in their last Premier League match. The Londoners now look like a well-settled and confident team who might have what it takes to clinch a win in the Tuesday match against PSG.

Summary

The famous Parc des Princes Stadium in the France´s capital will see what should be a fascinating football affair as the two biggest favourites of the Group A Paris Saint Germain and Arsenal FC will lock horns in one of the Champions League openers. Both of these sides rank among Europe´s elite and they appear in the Champions League regularly but they do not meet very often so it will be interesting to see them taking on each other. Will PSG make the home advantage count and claim a win in this attractive match? Or will it be the London team who will have the upper hand? To find out, we will have to wait until Tuesday night.
